I will always remember how cautious Mum was when the weather heated up. High temps meant chilled laid back days for the dogs. Given how hot it is out at the moment, I thought we should talk about our furry, non-sweating pets and how we can help keep them cool and safe! Having a Viszla it’s a challenge when a midday sprint around the park is off the cards, but taking some safety measures can keep the summer wagging wild and fun!

1.  Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

ALWAYS HAVE FRESH WATER AVAILABLE. Whether you're at home, in the car, or at the park, keep a bowl or portable dog water bottle handy. Ice cube treats are good as well.

2. Early and Late walkies

Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Early morning or after sunset walks are best. I learnt recently to test the pavement. Place the back of your hand on the ground—if it’s too hot for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for their paws.

3. Shade, shade and more shade

Wherever you are make sure there are cool spots for them, be the inside, shaded areas and using cool mats.

4. Never Leave Dogs in Parked Cars (Seriously!)

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can skyrocket in minutes. Definitely something I learnt early from Mum. Heatstroke symptoms include: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If this happens—move your dog to a cooler area immediately and call your vet.

5. Frozen Treats and Safe Snacks and paddling pools

Frozen treats like Kongs with banana or yogurt can help and burn some mental energy. Sully loves ice cream! And if they are out in the garden a small paddling pool not only gives them all the water they need but helps them cool down if they are playing

So there’s just a few tips and tricks from us. We wish you all a safe, but also fun and fabulous summer!!
